Art In Action: Art Quiz
By DARLA MCCAMMON

This week, we have an Art Quiz. I went back to some of my earliest columns and dug out some questions for you. Let’s see how good our memories are.
1. Unrealistic art work is also broadly defined as “abstract.” True or False?
2. Contemporary art work in general simply means work that has been created since World War II, and may be realistic or unrealistic. True or False?
3. Is there a difference between an art gallery and an art museum? If so, what is it?
4. What does it mean to paint using “negative space?”
5. Who created and designed one of the most unusual art galleries in the world—The Guggenheim?
6. What artist created the painting hanging in the Getty Museum in Los Angeles called “Portrait of a Halberdier?”
Answers
1. True.
2. True.
3. Yes, there is a difference. A museum houses and displays work that has been deemed to have historical merit and value or significance. Most work in a museum has been purchased to stay in that facility to preserve and present to the public. A gallery on the other hand generally houses work by current artists that is exhibited, but is also for purchase.
4. Sketching only the spaces around the object you wish to portray can make it show up more accurately and can help our left and right brain function more efficiently.
5. The artist/architect who designed this museum was Frank Lloyd Wright. You can visit his studio in Oak Park, Illinois—a suburb of Chicago. Or, if you are down at Purdue University, be sure you visit nearby “Samara,” a home with all furnishings intact and all designed by Wright.
6. Pontormo. He is considered one of the old masters and this painting, created in 1537 last sold for 62.1 million. Obscure during life, his work is now highly valued. Visit getty.edu/art to see it.
