Cross Country Teams Runner-Up At Hokum Karem
The WCHS boys and girls cross country teams combined their talents to open the season with a runner-up finish in the Hokum Karem Invitational at Schoaff Park in Fort Wayne Tuesday night.
For the first time in nearly 10 years, schools were allowed to race 10 co-ed partnerships by alternating running 1-mile loops (boy-girl-boy-girl-boy) to complete a 5-mile race. The top four team’s times were then added to create the school’s team score.
Junior Ellis Coon and senior Ashley Erba of the Tigers posted the fastest time recorded in the event’s history and 40 seconds faster than the second-place team Tuesday night with a 25:52, but were disqualified for missing a flag during the race. Erba won the individual girls state cross country championship in 2011.
Northridge won the Big School Varsity event. The Raiders top four partnerships (of one boy and one girl) totaled 1:49.34. Warsaw was second at 1:53.07, followed by Dwenger (1:56.24), Snider (1:56.24), South Adams (1:59.56), Northrop (2:05.32) and Fort Wayne North (2:08.52). Fort Wayne South and Fort Wayne Wayne had incomplete team scores.
The top WCHS teams (out of 111 teams) were as follows. Ellis Coon and Ashley Erba first (25:52), but disqualified, Jake Poyner and Hannah Dawson sixth (27:15), Robert Murphy and Emma Hayward eighth (27:43), Brysten James and Emily Stouder 18th (29:02), Tyler Houvener and Tennie Worrell 19th (29:07), Ismael Calderon and Kara Millington 22nd (29:16), Cam Hoskins and Kendra Paton 38th (30:16), Nate Haller and Hannah Thompson 39th (30:18), Michael Compton and Tayler Mylin 43rd (30:23) and Nick Adams and Claire Kehler 44th (30:24).
WCHS will compete in the Huntington Invitational Saturday at Huntington University at 10 a.m.
