The Mail-Journal Wins Two HSPA Awards
The Mail-Journal and its sister publication, the online daily InkFreeNews, were well represented at the 48th annual Hoosier State Press Foundation Newsroom Seminar Saturday. It was held at Indianapolis Marriott North and followed by the awards luncheon.
Attending for The Mail-Journal were David Hazeldine, Sarah Wright and Martha Stoelting while InkFree staff were Deb Patterson, Alyssa Richardson and John Faulkner.
Wright and Stoelting each received a third place award in the 2014 HSPA Better Newspaper Contest in division 1, non-daily newspapers with subscribers under 3,001 people.
Wright won for best multiple picture group featuring the Wawasee High School building trades program. The judge commented, “I like how you moved around the project and you have background action in some of your close up shots!”
Stoelting took her award for headline writing. “‘Flushing out sewer rates’ — loved that! Very creative heads that caught my attention and pushed me into the stories. Well-done!”
Seminar topics included Follow the Money, Photos: The good, the bad and the ughhh, Transparency, Literature in a Hurry, Shooting in Ferguson, Mo., and Digital Reader Engagement Strategies.
