Yesterday men and women alike met at the Warsaw National Guard Armory to break out their rackets and talent during a special Christmas pickleball tournament.
A total of 28 individuals participated in the round-robin formatted tourney. Women began playing at 1 p.m. with men starting their rounds at 2:30 p.m. A total of 16 women and 12 men participated in yesterday’s tournament, switching partners each round. Many in attendance were members of the Warsaw Pickleball Phanatics club as well as the North Webster Community Center Pickleball group.
According to the USA Pickleball Association (USAPA), pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton and ping pong. The sport was created for all ages and skill levels. The USAPA states that the rules for pickleball are simple and the game is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players.
According to Kayla Metzger, the Pickleball Phanatics have been playing pickleball for the past 5 years. The club meets three times a week to play as well as on special occasions for tournaments. The Pickleball Phanatics meet from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday and Thursday and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday. North Webster Community Center pickleball plays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays.
