Gun Laws, Hands-Free Driving Among State Legislation To Be Considered
The Indiana General Assembly is expected to take on several hot topics this session, which runs through April 29. Among the bills filed for consideration are legalizing medical marijuana, a push for Sunday alcohol sales and permitting caterers and florists to refuse to take part in same-sex weddings.
A bill that could toughen gun laws, inspired by a crime in Indianapolis, was filed by Senator Jim Merritt, R-Indianapolis. Senate Bill 279 is referred to as the Nathan Trapuzzano bill, named for a 24 year old man who was gunned down while on a walk by a 16 year old. In part, the legislation would require anyone age 14 or older be tried in adult if charged for using a gun.
Another bill written by Representative Milo Smith, R-Columbus, would require hands-free or voice operated devices and technology to be used when making cell phone calls while driving. The only exception would be if drivers need to call 911 to report an emergency. A hearing has not yet been scheduled for the bill, which will be considered by the roads and transportation committee.
