Amazon Planning New Wind Farm In Indiana
Amazon.com Inc. has teamed with Pattern Energy Group LP to construct and operate a 150 megawatt wind farm in Benton county, Indiana. The new project will be called the Amazon Web Services Wind Farm (Fowler Ridge) and is expected to be operational by the end of the year.
The new wind farm is projected to generate approximately 500,000 megawatt hours of power annually, or the equivalent of that used by roughly 46,000 US homes in a year. The energy generated will be used to help power both current and future data centers.
“Amazon Web Services Wind Farm (Fowler Ridge) will bring a new source of clean energy to the electric grid where we currently operate a large number of data centers and have ongoing expansion plans to support our growing customer base,” said Jerry Hunter, vice president of infrastructure.
In November, AWS shared its goal of achieving 100 percent renewable energy usage. AWS introduced its first carbon-neutral region, US West (Oregon), in 2011. It has since added two more, EU (Frankfort) and AWS GovCloud (US).
