Indy Author/Musician Brett Wiscons Releases Latest Bear Whitman Book
Indiana-based author and musician Brett Wiscons will release the third installment in his “Bear Whitman” book series. “Turn Three,” to be released in March 2015, builds upon the success of 2013’s “Friend or Foe” and 2014’s “Searching for Sara Caruso” and centers on the classic month of May in Indianapolis.
In “Turn Three,” Wiscons tells the story of a young racecar driver who meets his fate after a practice run goes awry. Some speculate that it wasn’t just an accident. Coming out of retirement, veteran detective Bear Whitman takes the case. The character is loosely based on Wiscons’ father.
“After my dad passed away in 2011, I wanted a way to still talk to him and keep his memory alive,” said Wiscons. “I based some of Bear Whitman’s back story and personality on my dad, Barry, but as the series has gone on, he has become more of his own man and much less of my father.”
Alongside the “Bear Whitman” series, Wiscons is experiencing a successful career as a musician, having left a lucrative sales job to pursue his passion. Two of his recent songs, “Sarazona” and “Sophia’s Winery,” started out as short stories until Wiscons and his producer later added melodies. Both songs are part of Wiscons’ latest EP, 33, released in 2014.
“Writing novels has really opened up my songwriting insofar as now I look at songwriting from a storytelling point of view,” says Wiscons. “And music plays a major role in the book. It’s almost one of the characters. Whether a song is on in the background, a lyrical reference is made or Bear is unwinding listening to some Miles Davis, I included an inordinate amount of musical undertones.”
Brett M. Wiscons is an Indiana-based author and musician. In 2013, he self-published the first installment in a series of books starring fictional private eye Bear Whitman in the debut novel Friend or Foe?, now available on Kindle, Nook and iPad. In addition to writing, he is a founding member of two premier live acts in Indianapolis. Leaving a lucrative sales job to follow his passion for music, Wiscons formed rock band Great Scott!, which just celebrated 10 years with a headlining show at the Vogue Theatre, and acoustic duo The Michaels. Wiscons’ musical influences range from Hootie and The Blowfish to Pearl Jam, and he has shared the stage with national recording artists Zac Brown Band and Katy Perry. Wiscons funded EP 33 in just 33 days via Kickstarter. He and his wife reside in Indianapolis.
