Mary Alice Pugh
Mary Alice Pugh, 93, a lifelong resident of Columbia City, died at 2:30 p.m. Friday, April 3, 2015, at Parkview Regional Medical Center, Fort Wayne.
She was born Feb. 14, 1922 in Fort Wayne, Indiana a daughter of John E. and D’Maris (Scott) Gates. She graduated from Columbia City High School in 1940. She then attended Stephens Junior College in Columbia, Mo., and graduated from University of Illinois in 1944 with a degree in journalism. Mary Alice was employed at Peabody Library for 13 years, retiring in January 1992. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church where she served as a deacon, elder and church treasurer, American Legion Post #98 Auxiliary and Coterie.
Surviving relatives include four children: John Pugh, Fort Wayne; Thomas (Dorothy) Pugh, Columbia City; retired Lt. Col. James (Mary Jo) Pugh, Westford, Mass.; Patricia Anderson, Bloomington; 10 grandchildren: Matthew Pugh, Adam Pugh, Rachel Pugh, Ryan Pugh, Jordan Pugh, Elizabeth Dillon, Zane Pugh, Maggie Anderson, Kate Anderson and Quinn Pugh; and a great-grandson.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son: Philip Scott Pugh; and a sister: Jane Lawson.
There will be no public visitation or service. Burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery.
Preferred memorials are to Grace Lutheran Food Pantry or Peabody Public Library.
