The Igloo Returns To Silver Lake
Those growing up in Silver Lake may remember The Igloo, operated by Forrest “Toby” and Marie Heckaman from 1959 to 1975.
Their step-granddaughter, Marilyn McDonald, has brought back not only The Igloo but an ice cream stand to Silver Lake. Located at 108 W. Main St., visitors may notice a little Eskimo in the shop’s logo, his official name is “Toby” after her stepgrandfather.
She states it is the only stand in the area.
The opening of the store occurred Wednesday afternoon, a day fit for the cool dessert.
The walk-up service will be open for six months out of the year, serving a variety of hand-dipped and soft served ice cream with specialties and sundaes. There is even a double-dip club to earn free ice cream.
Currently hours are 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday and noon to 10 p.m. Sunday. Check its Web page: www.iglooicecreamshop.com for current hours and flavors, as they will be changing.
