The South Bend Symphony Orchestra announces the final performance of its 2014-2015 Masterworks Series at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 9 at the Morris Performing Arts Center.

Maestro Tsung Yeh conducts one of the most important musical works of the twentieth century, Igor Stravinsky’s titanic ballet “The Rite of Spring.” This piece – a prominent favorite of orchestra musicians, and among the most difficult in the repertoire – was commissioned by Sergei Diaghilev’s company Ballet Russes and choreographed by legendary dancer Vaclav Nijinsky. With its storyline depicting the ritual sacrifice of a young girl in pagan Russia and its savage, rhythmically complex music and dance, the Rite smashed through notions about what classical music and ballet were, such that a riot famously ensued at its 1913 premiere at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris.

The program will also feature 17-year-old violin virtuoso Adé Williams. The dynamic Williams has won a number of prizes, including first place in the Junior Division of the 2012 Sphinx Competition. Williams previously performed with the South Bend Symphony for its Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration program in January 2013, and the orchestra is delighted she will return to play Antonio Vivaldi’s beloved Concerto No. 1 in E Major, “Spring.”

American composer Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring, another ballet, will also be performed. The work was commissioned by noted choreographer Martha Graham, and is famous for its use of the Shaker hymn “Simple Gifts.”

The concert is generously co-sponsored by Mutual Wealth and Jack Champaigne, with guest artist underwriting provided by a grant from the Muessel-Ellison Memorial Trust Foundation.
