Warsaw Track Ladies Make It A Perfect 10
WARSAW – Make it a perfect 10 for the Warsaw girls track program.
The WCHS ladies were once again queens of the Northern Lakes Conference Meet Tuesday night.
Host Warsaw used a pair of record-setting performances on a chilly night to claim its 10th straight NLC Meet championship.
The Tigers, led by the outstanding trio of Mariah Harter, Samantha Alexander and Audrey Rich, racked up 169 points to claim the hardware again.
“To win 10 in a row is kind of amazing,” said Warsaw girls track coach Scott Erba, whose program has also won 47 NLC regular-season meets in a row. “To have that level of consistency is tremendous.
“It just speaks to longevity and how many girls and how many coaches that we have had these last 10 years contribute to this. It’s a great testament to the ladies in our program now and the ones who were here before them.”
Warsaw made sure to put an exclamation point on another league crown.
The 4 X 100 relay team of senior Harter, juniors Alexander and Rich and freshman Abbi Curtis set a meet record with a top time of 49.53. The broke the old standard of 49.58 set by Warsaw back in 2006.
“That record has been on our board for them since the start of the season,” Erba said. “It’s a nice record for them to take down and should be a boost to them.”
The trio of Harter, Alexander and Rich formed three-fourths of the 4 X 100 relay team that was state runner-up a year ago for the Tigers.
Rich also made sure to put her name in the school record books. She won the 200 in 25.74, which topped the previous record of 25.83 that she shared with Mercedes Plummer.
“That was outstanding by Audrey to get that school record tonight,” commented Erba.
Alexander, who set the school record last week, also soared to an NLC title in the long jump with a best of 17-1.
The dynamite duo of Harter and Curtis placed 1-2 in the finals of the 100 in times of 12.90 and 12.98 respectively. Alexander was also third in the 200.
Senior Nicole Eckert had an outstanding 300 hurdles race, dominating to victory in a time of 45.96. Junior Rebecca Lemon of the Tigers was second in 48.74.
“Our 100, 200, 300 hurdles all performed very well tonight,” remarked Erba. “Our girls responded. Our 4 X 800 relay team ran a PR.”
Sophomore standout Allison Miller dominated the 3,200 for the champions. She won in 11:21.32, more than 32 seconds ahead of runner-up Morgan Blyly of Northridge.
The team of Eckert, Rich, junior Brooke Rhodes and senior Jazzmine Brown won the 4 X 400 relay in a top time of 4:07.03.
The team of Miller, Rhodes, junior Hannah Dawson and sophomore Anna Craig was second in the 4 X 800 relay in a personal best time of 9:38.53.
Freshman Mia Beckham notched a second-place finish in the 1,600 for the Tigers. Rhodes placed third in the 400 and Craig was fourth in the 800 for Warsaw.
Freshman Alexie Day cleared 5-3 to take second and Brown went 5-1 to place fourth in the high jump. Lemon was third in the pole vault at 9-4 and junior Emily Bailey was fourth in the shot put with a throw of 33-02.
Wawasee scored 61 points to finish in seventh place in the final team standings.
Senior Shelby Swartz placed third in the 100 hurdles in 16.75 for the Warriors. Junior Maddie Birch was fourth in the 3,200 in 12:00.92. Freshman Hannah-Marie Lamle was fifth in the 300 hurdles in 50.73.
The team of senior Catherine Yankosky, junior Sarah Lancaster and sophomores Leigh-Ann Schrack and Skylar Janda was fourth in the 4 X 100 relay in a time of 52.44 for Wawasee.
Senior Hannah Winters was second in the discus with a throw of 102-09. Junior Katyln Kennedy placed third in the shot put with an effort of 34-05.
Kennedy earned All-NLC honorable mention honors in voting by the league coaches after the meet.
“I’m happy with the way our girls team competed,” said Wawasee coach Scott Lancaster. “They are young and inexperienced, but they are making strides. I’m happy with where they are at.”
Warsaw was followed in the final team standings by Elkhart Memorial in second place with 110 points. Goshen and Plymouth tied for third with 86 points, followed by Northridge (83.5), Concord (81.5), Wawasee (61) and NorthWood (56).
The only downer for Warsaw was that senior Tennie Worrell, who was the top seed in the 400, was out due to a quad injury suffered last week. Erba said that he is hopeful that Worrell can compete in at least one event at the sectional.
All NLC Meet champions Tuesday night earn all-league honors. Lemon was an All-NLC at-large pick by the coaches and Worrell was an honorable mention choice.
Warsaw will host the sectional next Tuesday night. The Warriors will be part of the sectional field.
