Milford Celebrates Memorial Day
The weather cooperated with those attending the Memorial Day parade in Milford this morning. The sun darted behind clouds throughout the parade, which paid honor to fallen veterans.
Veteran Bob Geiger lead prayer at a brief memorial in front of Milford Town Hall follow by members of the honor guard giving a 21-gun salute during a traditional military honors. The Milford American Legion float carried several area veterans who call Milford home.
Following the veterans were city, county and state law enforcement vehicles as well as the Milford Volunteer Fire Department trucks.
Floats representing area service clubs threw candy for the eager children armed with bags. The Milford Kiwanis celebrated with other members this year, for its international 100th birthday.
Milford Fest cutie king and queen winners along with the prince and princess brought smiles to the crowd as they rode along waved. Also wearing a crown earned at Milford Fest were senior king and queen, Bud and Jeri Seely.
Churches brought floats with their summer VBS themes, reminding kids to attend the summer programming. Milford Christian Church and Wawasee Community Bible Church were among those in the parade line up.
Classic cars, four-wheelers and a crowd favorite, the Lions go-cart club kept the parade in motion.
After the parade ended, members of the American Legion, Milford Boys Scouts and Milford Middle School band presented the Veterans Memorial Day service at Milford Cemetery. Some rain and strong wind made for a shorter than planned ceremony. Bob Geiger opened with prayer. Bill Troup and Chuck Bird posted the colors.
Bob Brown addressed the crowd with words reminding them of the sacrifice men and women have made for the sake of duty. Brown’s reflections asked, “Was there a composer whose music we never heard? Thinkers whose ideas we could never know?” He adds; “Let all who stand here reflect on the sacrifice these patriots made on our behalf. They gave all their tomorrow that we may have today.”
Brown read the names of local Veterans that have passed away during the last year. They are; Lawrence Stieglitz, Lawrence (Bud) Sawyer, Bob Wolferman and Carl Chupp.
The memorial service concluded with prayer and military honors by Milford American Legion, at the cemetery flag pole.
