37 Tornadoes In One Day: State’s Most Devastating Outbreak On Record
Today, June 2, marks the 25th anniversary of the largest tornado outbreak in the state of Indiana’s history.
On June 2, 1990, 37 separate tornadoes touched down across the state, which broke previous records and has not yet been surpassed since.
Twelve Hoosiers were killed as a result of the storms and 237 homes were destroyed. The strongest of the tornadoes were in southern and central Indiana.
Some of the hardest hit areas included the southwest Indiana town of Petersburg, where seven people lost their lives. An F-4 tornado also did terrible damage in Lawrence county near Bedford, where one person was killed, 12 homes were destroyed and several businesses were leveled.
Other areas in the Midwest saw tornadoes that day as well. Including those in Indiana, a total of 65 tornadoes touched down across the Ohio Valley.
