All-Star Squad Drops Exhibition Contest
COLUMBUS – A short-handed Indiana All-Star boys basketball team lost to its Jr. counterparts Wednesday night in an exhibition game.
The Jr. All-Stars topped the Senior team 103-89 in exhibition action at Columbus North High School.
The win was the first for the Jr. team over the All-Stars since 2011. The Senior squad had posted a 118-79 win in an exhibition game Monday night.
The All-Star team was without Matt Holba, due to an injury. The squad also lost Derrik Smits in the first half to a foot injury. Mr. Basketball Caleb Swanigan of Homestead also did not play as he is attending tryouts for the national team.
The game was not the story of the night anyway.
Josh Speidel, an Indiana All-Star from Columbus North High School, made an appearance prior to the game. Seidel suffered a serious brain injury in an auto accident back on Feb. 1. He took several steps on to the court when announced, with the aid of a walker and his parents.
Devin Cannady, who played at Mishawaka Marian, had 11 points, five assists and two steals in 24 minutes of playing time for the All-Stars.
Ryan Cline, a Purdue recruit, led the way for the All-Stars with 28 points. Tahjai Teague, who will play at Ball State, had 19 points and 10 rebounds.
Eron Gordon led the winning Jr. All-Stars with 23 points.
The Indiana All-Star girls team topped the Jr. squad 86-83.
Miss Basketball Ali Patberg, who played at Columbus North and is headed for Notre Dame, led the way with 23 points.
Jackie Young, another Irish recruit, led the Jr. team with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Young, a 6-0 guard, led her Princeton High School team to a win over Tippecanoe Valley in the Class 3-A state championship game back in March.
Former NorthWood High School standout Jordyn Frantz had three points and two rebounds in seven minutes of playing time for the All-Stars.
The Indiana All-Stars play Kentucky Friday night in Lexington. The girls game starts the action at 5:30 p.m. at Transylvania University. The Hoosier squads then host Kentucky Saturday night at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis with the girls game first at 5 p.m.
