Shutout Punctuates Dragons Sweep
DAYTON, Ohio – Fort Wayne lost to the Dayton Dragons, 1-0, on Monday night at Fifth Third Field.
The Dragons scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. After two walks and an infield single loaded the bases with one out, Gavin LaValley plated Luis Gonzalez with a groundout to third base.
Left-hander Thomas Dorminy (L, 7-7) ended up the tough-luck loser. He yielded only two hits, including the sixth-inning dribbler down the first-base line, and three walks, while striking out five. Lefty Kyle McGrath followed with two scoreless innings.
The trouble for the TinCaps was that Dayton (13-12, 52-43) starter Tyler Mahle was every bit as good. The right-handed Reds prospect gave up just two hits and two walks over seven frames. Mahle (W, 10-5) struck out nine. Ty Sterner (H, 1) blanked Fort Wayne (14-11, 46-47) in the eighth to bridge the gap to Conor Krauss (S, 5) in the ninth.
Shortstop Ruddy Giron led the top of the ninth off with a single and made it to third base with two outs thanks to a Michael Gettys grounder and Trae Santos fly ball to deep right-center field. However, right fielder Franmil Reyes, who had walked in his previous two plate appearances, struck out to end the game.
Both sides mustered three hits in the 2 hour, 12-minute contest, as the Dragons swept the three-game series. Fort Wayne hadn’t been swept since May 11-14 at home against the Lake County Captains.
The TinCaps continue their nine-game road trip with the middle leg at Lake County (Indians) on Tuesday night at 7:00. Fort Wayne is set to start right-hander Dinelson Lamet (3-4, 3.49) against lefty Anderson Polanco (4-6, 4.24). The game can be heard on ESPN Radio 1380, TinCaps.com, and the TuneIn Radio app.
