Robert H. Auer
Robert H. Auer, 91, a lifelong Whitley County resident, died at 8:53 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, 2015, at Renaissance Village where he had been a resident since May.
He was born March 2, 1924, in Whitley County a son of Carl J. and Ethel M. (Eberhard) Auer. He graduated from Coesse High School in 1942, playing all four years on the varsity basketball team and serving as Captain his Senior year.
On April 8, 1944, he was united in marriage to Evelyn L. Shroyer. They made their home on their farm until June 1989 when they moved into Columbia City following retirement from dairy and grain farming. They also wintered in Naples, Fla. for 20 years where Bob enjoyed fishing.
He was a member of First Church of God where he served as a deacon, trustee and on the “fix-it” ministry. Bob was also an avid IU fan.
Surviving relatives include his wife of 71 years: Evelyn; four children: Jeanne (Dennis) White, Columbia City; Margaret (Richard) Taylor, Columbia City; Jim (Ann) Auer, Milford; and Marcia (Karl) Ruetz, Fort Wayne; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a sister: Gladys Wysong, Columbia City.
He was preceded in death by two sisters: Florence Lott; and Esther Auer.
The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12, at Smith and Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery. The visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11, at the funeral home.
Preferred memorials are to First Church of God, Winebrenner Seminary or Visiting Nurse and Hospice.
