Two Torres’ Named To MWL All-Star Roster
Fort Wayne TinCaps outfielder Nick Torres and South Bend Cubs shortstop Gleybor Torres were named to the Midwest League’s 2015 Post Season All-Star Roster.
The team was selected by the Field Managers of the 16 Midwest League clubs.
“It’s an honor to be selected,” Torres said from Lake Elsinore, Calif. He was promoted by the Padres from Fort Wayne to the Advanced-A Lake Elsinore Storm of the California League on July 10. “Thanks again to all the fans in Fort Wayne for their support this season.”
At the time of his departure from the TinCaps, Torres was the team’s best hitter, and one of the best in the entire league. In 77 games with Fort Wayne, he hit .326 (tied for 2nd best in the MWL) with 29 doubles (1st), 133 total bases (3rd), 94 hits (5th), and a .462 slugging percentage (10th). Torres, who was also a mid-season All-Star, had been leading the TinCaps with 40 RBIs and a .378 on-base percentage as well. Defensively, as a corner outfielder, he played more games than anyone else in the league without committing an error.
Gleybor Torres was recently named the Midwest League Prospect of the Year and was the starting shortstop in the Midwest League All-Star Game.
The Cubs star prospect currently leads the South Bend club in hits (131), doubles (22), RBIs (61) and has done so in 114 games. Torres is batting .296 and has an OBP of .358 through Tuesday’s games.
“Gleyber has made many strides this year both physical and mentally,” South Bend manager Jimmy Gonzalez said. “He has been a crucial part of this ball club and has done an outstanding job for us on the field this year.
“He’s going to do good things because he works hard and has a great desire to succeed,” Gonzalez said. “I’m extremely happy for him being honored as prospect of the year.”
