Grace Soccer Team Posts Shutout
WINONA LAKE – The Grace College women’s soccer team shared the wealth Friday as five different players scored goals in a 5-0 victory over Purdue Calumet.
The Lady Lancers (5-0-1), who are receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25 Poll, earned their fourth shutout win of the season.
“It was great to see the women play well today right off the first whistle,” said Grace head coach Michael Voss. “Tonight was a collectively solid performance across the board, which is always good to see.”
Grace enjoyed strong possession throughout the match, resulting in a 29-5 shot advantage. Holly Bennett started Grace’s scoring with a goal in the 13th minute. Kristin Yocum weaved through traffic in the midfield before picking out Bennett streaking toward the goal. Bennett settled the ball and slotted it past the goalkeeper for the game’s first goal.
Ten minutes later, Grace’s offensive pressure resulted in a poor pass from the Peregrines’ (1-4) goalkeeper. Mallory Rondeau pounced on interception and ripped her shot into the right side of the net.
Carianne Sobey added the third goal when she finished a close-range goal that started with a free kick from Lauren Becker.
With 26 seconds remaining in the first half, Hannah Alcorn scored her first career goal inside the penalty box. Darcy Johnston was credited with the assist after sending in her corner kick from the left side of the field.
Neither team scored through the first 35 minutes of the second half until Jackie Seal’s strike at the 80:23 mark.
Seal dribbled her way into a sliver of space on the right side of the penalty box. She then unleashed a well-placed shot that was out of the diving goalkeeper’s reach for the final tally of the match.
Abigail Burns earned the shutout in goal by making two saves in 90 minutes of action.
Grace will now shift its attention to No. 25 Siena Heights for their home match Saturday at Miller Field. First kick is set for 2 p.m.
