McDonald’s Denies BK World Peace Efforts
NATIONAL — In newspaper ads across Chicago and New York yesterday, Aug. 26, Burger King reached out to competitor McDonald’s in an attempt to collaborate on a new burger: the McWhopper.
The intent was to collaborate for one day in order to raise money for Peace One Day, a charity focused on world peace. Seeking to raise awareness for world peace, the one-day event would be Sept. 21, or International Day of Peace.
Burger King’s plan was to have the combined efforts of Burger King and McDonald’s be held at the halfway point between McDonald’s headquarters and Burger King headquarters, in Atlanta, Ga.
Burger King even went so far as to create a flashy website detailing their plans for the historic event, at McWhopper.com.
“All these ingredients come together to build the burger some said would never happen. Some say the same thing about world peace. Together, let’s prove them wrong on Peace Day, Sept. 21,” says the website in an attempt to reach out to McDonald’s.
McDonald’s declined the invitation, and in its refusal, proposed the collaborate in a bigger way. The refusal implied that something more meaningful could be done than creating a new burger. “We love the intention but think our two brands could do something bigger to make a difference,” said McDonalds CEO, Steve Easterbrook on Facebook.
