Triton Closes Regular Season With Bang
BOURBON – Just a few days ahead of the open of the sectional tournament at Culver, the Triton volleyball team hung its biggest win of the season Thursday night. Holding off Plymouth on two occasions, Triton escaped senior night with a 26-24, 25-23, 20-25, 26-24 thriller at the Trojan Trench.
In what has been a competitive season but lacking a signature win for the Trojans, the team picked up a huge one just five days before the Culver Sectional opens next Tuesday. Triton twice held off Plymouth with the match tied at 24, including the game winner that moves the team to 16-13 on the season, guaranteeing a winning season regardless of sectional outcomes.
Jaela Meister, playing in her final match at home, was huge in the clutch. Meister had six kills in the first game, then closed with seven hammers in the final game to sink the Pilgrims. Meister had 19 kills overall, to go with 15 digs, two aces and two blocks. Triton’s second senior, Brooklyn Bitting, finished with two digs, two kills and two blocks.
Nicole Sechrist had another big night, ending with 15 digs, 11 kills and an ace. Quinn Downing and Emma Ross combined for 34 digs and two aces, Courtney Jennings chipped in two kills, two digs, an ace and a block, and Hannah Wanemacher also had a big game with 29 assists, eight digs, an ace and a kill.
Triton as a whole registered 76 digs as Plymouth put pressure on the Trojan defense all night.
Plymouth won the JV contest 25-17, 25-12.
Triton will face Oregon-Davis in the first round of the Culver Volleyball Sectional Tuesday night at 7 p.m. The winner will face South Central (Union Mills) at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Culver semi-final. The championship game is at 4 p.m. Saturday.
