Tennis Team Stays Unbeaten In NLC
The Warsaw boys tennis team was all business Thursday night to continue their undefeated season in the Northern Lakes Conference.
The Tigers rolled in straight sets at all five positions to blank NorthWood 5-0 in a Northern Lakes Conference match in Nappanee.
Warsaw, with the win, sets up a showdown on Monday at Concord for the regular-season NLC championship. The Tigers and the Minutemen are both a perfect 6-0 in league play. Warsaw is now 8-2 overall on the season and Concord sits at 9-5.
The Tigers’ singles lineup of Kyle Wettschurack, Evan Miller and Alek Jansen lost a total just seven games in rolling to wins Thursday.
Wettschurack, a junior, led the way with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 1 over Mitchell Keiser. Miller beat Quinn Stillson 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 and Jansen defeated Abe Robinson 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3.
Warsaw also took the doubles action in straight sets. AJ Herendeen and Sam Rice won 6-2, 6-4 over Brennan Angle and Jayson Linhart at No. 1. The No. 2 doubles team of Will Petro and Connor Singrey topped Devyn Maugel and Caleb Yoder 6-1, 6-3.
NorthWood drops to 1-12 overall and 0-6 in the NLC.
The JV match ended in a 6-6 tie. Winning for Warsaw in singles play were Nick Hamrick and Caleb Ray. Also winning were the doubles teams of Nic Jansen and Christopher Herendeen, Caleb Snyder and Caleb DeBoest, Chris Stichter and Drew McCollom and Evan Bremer and Cole Baker.
Warsaw plays at Concord Monday at 4:30. The Tigers then take part in the NLC Tournament Sept. 19, 20 and 22, also at Concord.
Volleyball Team Edges Plymouth For Key NLC Win
It wasn’t easy for the Warsaw volleyball team Thursday night.
The Tigers, however, rallied to remain undefeated in league play by collecting a tough 3-2 win at Plymouth.
Warsaw took the Northern Lakes Conference match 21-25, 25-18, 25-20, 7-25, 15-13 versus the host Pilgrims.
Senior star Jamie Lacheta led the way for the Tigers with 20 kills, four aces and 11 digs. Warsaw improves to 13-1 overall and a perfect 4-0 in NLC action.
Katie Voelz had a big match for Warsaw with 15 kills and a team-high 26 digs. Emily Poe slammed 14 kills and had 16 digs for the winners. Alex Sanchez had two aces and senior setter Chloe Hubner racked up 47 assists in the victory.
The trio of Voelz, Sam Jensen and Rebecca Ailes each had two blocks for coach Mike Howard’s squad.
Warsaw and NorthWood are now the lone two NLC teams still sporting undefeated marks in league play. NorthWood, which received votes in this week’s Class 3-A poll, beat Elkhart Memorial 25-20, 25-27, 25-18, 25-17 Thursday night to improve to 14-3 overall and 3-0 in the NLC. Warsaw hosts NorthWood on Sept. 27.
The Warsaw JV team, coached by former WCHS star athlete Chandra Hepler (formerly Chandra Hopkins), beat Plymouth 25-13, 25-21. The JV Tiger squad is now 12-0.
Warsaw plays in the Michigan City Invitational Saturday and at NLC foe Wawasee Thursday. The JV team hosts its own tournament Saturday.
