Spriggs Up For Prestigious Honor
BLOOMINGTON – Former Concord High School football standout Jason Spriggs is up for one big time collegiate honors.
Spriggs, a senior offensive lineman at Indiana University, is one of six semifinalists for the prestigious Outland Trophy. The award is given each season to the top interior lineman in the country.
Spriggs, a 6-7, 305-pound offensive tackle for the Hoosiers, was announced as a semifinalist Thursday night by the Football Writers Association of America. The field will be trimmed to the three finalists on Nov. 24 with the winner being announced on Dec. 10 during an awards program on ESPN.
Spriggs, who was also a standout in basketball and track and field at Concord, has started 44 of 45 games and has allowed just two sacks this season in 365 pass plays. He has allowed a total of just four sacks in his entire college career. IU is averaging 467 yards per game, which is tops in the Big Ten Conference.
Joining Spriggs as semifinalists for the Outland Trophy are Ronnie Stanley of Notre Dame, A’Shawn Robinson and Ryan Kelly, both of Alabama, Spencer Drago of Baylor and Josh Garnett of Stanford.
The Hoosiers, who are 4-6 overall and 0-6 in the Big Ten, play at Maryland at noon on Saturday. IU, which has lost its last six games after a 4-0 start, then plays at Purdue in their regular season and conference finale on Nov. 28 at noon.
