Syracuse Parks And Rec Board Ready For New Year
SYRACUSE — Syracuse Parks and Recreation Board convened Monday evening, Dec. 14, for its final meeting of the year. The agenda included a look at community events, board recommendations and the 2016 budget.
Chad Jonsson, parks superintendent, presented the department reports listing maintenance projects for the community center he would like to start working on at beginning of the year. Painting the arts and craft room and waxing the floor were mentioned as such items.
Program director Tyler McLead updated the board on community events. Judo and pickle-ball continue on a weekly basis.
Registration for the adult basketball league remains open through Jan. 4. Registration and league rules are available online at www.syracusein.org.
Fall “Pinterest parties” had 66 attendees during four monthly make and take craft events. McLead reported there will be more Pinterest crafts in the future.
Santa will be delivering more than 100 letters to local children who dropped a letter at the community center mailbox.
Syracuse Community Center will host a middle school dance 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 18, 1013 N. Long Drive. Students may bring four non-perishable food items to receive $2 off the $5 cover charge. Donations will go to the local food pantry. As a reminder those attending must remain at the dance until 9 p.m. or until a guardian picks them up.
The next family movie night will be feature “Minions” at 6:30 Friday, Jan. 8, at Syracuse Community Center in the gymnasium. This is a free event open to the public. Those attending are welcome to bring chairs and blankets for seating. Concessions will be available to purchase.
McLead announced the Syracuse Winter Carnival date has been moved to Saturday, Feb. 13, to ensure the ice is at a safe depth for snowmobile racing. Live entertainment is planned for downtown and snowmobile races will be held at Lakeside Park. The annual soup supper will remain on Friday, Jan. 29, at the Syracuse Community Center.
In old business, the board recommended Shirley Connolly and Dave VanLue to continue serving on the board for another term. The recommendation will be made to Syracuse Town Council.
Jonsson presented the non-reverting operating budget, outlining proposed changes for 2016 based on this year’s expenditures. Members of the board unanimously approved the revised budget for the new year. In a final motion the board approved the 2016 index of park board meetings with the schedule set for the second Monday of each month.
Syracuse Parks and Recreation Board will assemble again Jan. 11.
