Red Bull Air Race Coming To IMS
INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Motor Speedway has announced that the Red Bull Air Race World Championship Series will be coming to Indy in 2016.
The event is scheduled for the weekend of Oct. 1.
In a statement, IMS president Doug Boles said, “In 2016, as we celebrate the historic 100th Running of the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race, it’s fitting that the world’s best pilots will gather at IMS for a breathtaking display of competition and innovation that will honor the legacies of IMS founder Carl Fisher, the Wright brothers and their fellow aviation pioneers.”
This is not the first venture into aviation for the Speedway. The first race ever held at IMS was a balloon race in 1909. A year later, the track hosted the nation’s first aviation meet. The track also served as a military aviation and refueling depot during World War I.
The schedule for the event is as follows:
Training will take place at the Speedway on Sept. 29-30. Qualifying will be held on Saturday, Oct. 1. Race day will be Oct. 2. That will be consist of three rounds of competitions.
