Breast Cancer Patient Helping Others Sparkle Through Chemo
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — It doesn’t take much to turn Robyn Adams into the so-called Sparkle Lady. She dons a bright fuschia wig, a necklace and some bracelets and starts her journey visiting each women getting chemo treatment at the Levine Cancer Institute.
“My name is Robyn and I have a project called Sparkle, and I’d like to have you choose a piece of jewelry today,” she says as she approaches one patient.
A year and a half ago Robyn started her first chemo treatment — dressed comfortably.
“What I decided to do was to not come in my sweatpants anymore and come dressed up and wear my jewelry and sparkle because cancer can’t take that away. It can take a lot of things away but it can’t take that away.”
She decided to spread the sparkle.
“I had my friends and family gather jewelry up to give to all the patients in the area.”
I think it’s great — it’s your attitude,” says Mary Falink, who is undergoing her 69 chemo treatment as she battles ovarian cancer. “You’ve got to really fight and have a really good attitude.”
“I just wanted to bring a little sparkle to everybody; makes us feel a little bit better when we’re here.”
When Charlotte-based Towne and Reese, a jewelry line sold in stores across the country, heard Robyn’s story, they wanted to help. Co-owner Christi Pack told Robyn, “We were so incredibly touched by your zest for life and your love for others and positive outlook that we wanted to do what we could to help.”
The company donated two giant boxes filled with 150 pieces of jewelry for Robyn to give away.
She was in tears going through all the rings and bracelets.
“That is amazing! Oh my gosh, thank you so very much!” she exclaimed.
