Triton Hopes High For Bi-County Tournament
Earning bragging rights as champions of the annual Teachers Credit Union Bi-County Tournament is always a big deal.
The Triton boys and girls teams hope to find themselves in the winner’s circle come the conclusion of the 51st event on Jan. 23.
The Trojans will compete along with New Prairie, John Glenn, Argos, Bremen, Oregon-Davis, LaVille and Culver in the tournament, which begins on the varsity side with first-round games on Jan. 19.
Triton drew New Prairie in a first-round matchup and will host the Cougars for the girls/boys doubleheader next Tuesday in Bourbon.
The Triton boys team is 7-4 on the season, while the Cougars sit at 3-6. The Trojans, who are led by Jordan Anderson and Masen Yeo, play at Culver Friday night in a girls/boys doubleheader. Triton has not played New Prairie this season.
Culver, which plays at Oregon-Davis in a first-round game, sports the top record on the boys side at 9-1.
LaVille is the defending boys champion as the Lancers edged Glenn 50-48 in the title game in 2015.
The Triton girls team has recovered from a tough start to right the ship. The Trojans, who started their season at 0-6, are now 7-11 after a home conference win over Winamac Tuesday night. Triton, the lone unbeaten left in league play, can clinch at least a share of the Hoosier North Athletic Conference championship with a win at Culver (2-14) Friday night.
The Trojan ladies are led by Hannah Wvnemacher and Jaela Meister. They have not played New Prairie, which is 2-15, this season. Triton would advance to play either Argos or Glenn in the semifinals with a win over the Cougars. Triton lost 48-28 at Glenn in their season opener and 57-25 to Argos in their second game of the season.
The girls bracket has favorite Oregon-Davis on one side and Argos on the other. The Bobcats are 16-2 and ranked No. 2 in Class 2-A, while the Dragons are 14-2 and ranked No. 5 in Class 2-A. OD won at Argos 76-29 Thursday night.
Glenn is the defending girls champion. The Falcons beat Culver 48-37 in the title game a year ago.
The finals for both the junior varsity and varsity tournaments will be contested at LaVille High School on Jan. 23.
