Jackie Young Breaks Scoring Record [VIDEO]
OAKLAND CITY — The goal was 28, the pressure was on, the state was watching and she still delivered.
Princeton’s Jackie Young needed 28 points to surpass Indiana high school girls scoring leader Shanna Zolman, who topped the list with 3,085 career points. Young hit the mark dead on in a 48-26 win at Wood Memorial.
Memorial, which had previously held Young to a season-low 16 points made the Notre Dame recruit work for the record. A stalling tactic in the first half left the host Memorial squad trailing just 14-13 at half.
Young started to find a rhythm in the second half and, more importantly, found the charity stripe. It was from the free throw line that Young had her record-breaking moment. The senior hit nothing but net with 3:30 left in the contest to put her at 3,086, pushing her ahead of Zolman and into the history books forever.
Young now sits behind only Damon Bailey who remains as the state’s all-time leading scorer with 3,134 points. Young entered Thursday’s game averaging over 38 points per game and will have at least six more games remaining this season.
Zolman congratulated Young from her home in Seattle with this video on YouTube.
