Spring Arbor Outlasts Grace Ladies
WINONA LAKE – It took three overtimes to come up with a winner between Grace and Spring Arbor in a marathon matchup on Saturday afternoon.
After the dust settled, the Cougars (14-12, 6-8 Crossroads League) came out on top 84-77 on Grace’s Senior Day.
The Lady Lancers (6-20, 1-13 CL) struggled to find their offense in the third overtime period. Grace started the overtime with turnovers on three straight possessions, and the hosts shot just 1-of-7 from the floor. Grace’s only points of the third overtime came on a 3-pointer by Kelsey Sule with 30 seconds remaining in the game.
Spring Arbor pulled away thanks to its free throw shooting. The Cougars were in the double bonus since the end of regulation and capitalized on their trips to the line. Spring Arbor made eight free throws in the third overtime and took 21 more free throws than Grace in the contest.
Grace’s seniors impressed on Senior Day. Sarah Feasby had a double-double of 26 points and a season-high 11 rebounds. Gabby Miller finished with 17 points. Jesse Feitz fell just short of a double-double, tallying nine boards and eight points.
Neither team was able to build much of a gap in the first quarter with the score tied six times. Spring Arbor attempted to find their stroke from the 3-point line early, but they were only able to connect once. Grace shot an excellent 60 percent from the floor.
Grace was led in the second quarter by Feasby, who could not be stopped on the offensive end. Feasby single-handedly put Grace on an 8-0 run in the middle of the quarter. Spring Arbor was able to answer, ending the half on a buzzer beater to take a 30-29 lead. Feasby went into halftime with 18 points.
Grace began to spread the ball around in the third quarter. Gabby Miller made an important impact on offense with seven points. Another buzzer beater from Spring Arbor — this time a 3-pointer — gave the Cougars a one-point lead heading into the fourth.
In the fourth quarter, Spring Arbor started strong and took a five-point edge. But Grace battled back to gain a 56-54 lead. Late in regulation Spring Arbor thought it had won the game with a basket with five seconds remaining, giving the Cougars a two-point lead. But Sarah Feasby answered Grace’s prayer, scoring off the ensuing inbounds play with a layup off a nifty play.
Grace held the lead for most of the first overtime period. A deep jumper from freshman Lauren Godfrey lifted Grace to a 65-62 lead with less than a minute to play, but the Cougars rallied to tie the game on an and-1, and the game was sent to a second OT.
In the second overtime, Grace had a 74-70 lead with only 25 seconds remaining. But again the Cougars made a comeback. Spring Arbor cut the deficit to two with 12 seconds left. The Cougars then came up with a steal and scored the game-tying layup with seconds remaining, leaving the game tied at 74-74. Grace’s steam ran out in the third OT after having lost both Darian Patton and Haley Richardson to fouls.
The Lady Lancers struggled to draw fouls and convert on their chances at the free throw line. Grace only took seven free throws and made just one of those tries. The Cougars, on the other hand, took 28 trips to the line and made 20.
Spring Arbor ran their offense through Kylie Townsley and Rachel Driesenga. Townsley led both teams in scoring with 28 points. Driesenga had a game-high 12 boards to go along with 17 points.
The Lady Lancers shot a season-high 47 percent from the field for the game. The lead changed hands 15 times throughout the contest.
Godrey scored seven points while playing 37 minutes, and Richardson added six points and three assists.
Grace will look to bounce back against Goshen on Wednesday at 6 p.m. The Lady Lancers’ game is the first part of a men’s and women’s basketball doubleheader between the Maple Leafs.
