Vikings Grab Lead In TRC
AKRON – The Tippecanoe Valley football team sits alone atop the standings in the Three Rivers Conference.
The Vikings moved into sole possession of the league lead Friday night with a hard-fought 27-6 TRC win over Rochester.
The victory, coupled with North Miami’s 13-10 TRC loss at Whitko Friday night, leaves Valley as the lone unbeaten left in conference play. The Vikings move to 5-0 in the TRC, while both Rochester and North Miami are now 4-1 in the league.
A balanced attack Friday night helped the Vikings beat their rivals and retain the Bell Trophy.
Four different players scored in the win for Valley. Chris Torpy scored on a four-yard run, Nolan Sponseller on an eight-yard run and Tanner Andrews caught an 11-yard touchdown toss from Ben Shriver. The Viking defense also got into the act as Dan Miller returned an interceptions 50 yards for a touchdown.
Shriver, who attended school in Rochester in grade school, was 10-13 passing for 103 yards with the one touchdown pass. Andrews caught six passes for 60 yards.
The 1-2 punch of Justin Gunter and Torpy led the ground game for Valley. Gunter racked up 81 yards on 16 carries and Torpy added 79 on 15.
Valley led just 13-6 after three quarters before adding a pair of scores in the final period of play.
The Vikings have now won six in a row to improve to 6-1 overall and 5-0 in the TRC. Rochester falls to 4-3 overall and 4-1 in the league.
Valley plays at North Miami next Friday night in another TRC clash.
