The little dog with one of the firefighters who rescued him from a crash on I-65

JOHNSON COUNTY — A dog who survived a deadly semi crash on I-65 Wednesday, March 9, is alive and in good condition.

The dog was found by several volunteer firefighters with the Needham Fire Dept.

The crash killed 52-year-old Tyrone McKenney of Quinby, S. C., who was driving the semi.

The dog was inside the semi truck’s cab when the truck crashed. She wasn’t found until several hours after the fire was out.

“She landed in just the right spot, lucky girl.” volunteer firefighter Nathan Young said of the animal.

All while crews were cleaning up the scene.

“As we realized she was alive we extricated the door, that’s when she was able to stand up and turned to us and walk over out of the way so we could finish spreading the door and then we just picked her up wrapped her in a blanket and here she is.” Young said.

And surprisingly not a scratch on was found on her. She was taken to the Franklin Animal Clinic where she was checked out.

The group of volunteer firefighters say they will keep her, for now.

“We’ll find out if the family wants her, or if anyone is back home that she belongs to. You know her daddy passed away today,” volunteer firefighter Angela Arnold said. “And if they want her, we’ll get her back there, whatever it takes. If they don’t want her then this is her home.”

The group says they are taking donations to help pay for the dog’s return home, if there is a return home.
