Limitless Park Community Build Set For April
WINONA LAKE — A date has been set for the Winona Lake Limitless Park community build event and all are invited to participate.
According to Winona Lake Park Department Director Holly Hummitch, site preparation begins at 11 a.m. Friday, April 22. This will include digging foundation holes, unwrapping equipment pieces and other pre-construction necessities.
A brief volunteer meeting is set for 8 a.m. Saturday, April 23, with construction to follow immediately. All are invited to lend a hand. Volunteers who cannot make it at 8 a.m. can arrive as their schedules allow. Work will continue until the playground is complete.
Hummitch noted that the entire process is expected to take about three weeks, including removal of the existing equipment and mulch. After the community build, finishing touches will include installation of drainage, sidewalks, the sub-base and resilient surfacing.
Overall, Hummitch noted, community response to Limitless Park has been positive. However, she added, a few people have expressed concerns over safety of the structure.
“Will a community-built play structure be safe? Absolutely,” Hummitch said. “Safety is our first and foremost concern. All designs conform with Consumer Product Safety Commission standards and guidelines as well as ADA law. All construction consultants are certified playground and safety inspectors by the National Recreation and Parks Association. Upon completion, the playground structure will be inspected and approved by the CPSI.”
Even after the playground is in place, fundraising will continue.
“We continue to write grants, host fundraising events and seek community and corporate involvement as we strive to finish the remainder of Phase II, the restroom facility located at the splash pad and future programming,” she said.
