Chautauqua-Wawasee Zumba-ing For A Good Cause
SYRACUSE — No, this isn’t your mother’s standard workout class. From the rump-shaking beats to the workout breaks at the cash bar, Zumba with Chautauqua-Wawasee and Lakeside Fitness is more than your mama imagined.
Actually, there were several mother and daughter duos spotted at tonight’s event, so share the news with mom.
Marlies Selent-West was back it this year with the fundraiser, and thanks to the generous donations from sponsors like Oakwood Resort, Lakeside Fitness, The Sleepy Owl Supper Club, Monteith Tire and Goshen Home Medical, the event allowed a group of local ladies sweat it out for a good cause.
The Zumba event raised funds for a local charity, Destiny Rescue. The non-profit organization seeks to end child exploitation and slavery across the world, and is based out of Syracuse.
A small admission charge gave Zumba guests a chance to win raffle prizes from local vendors, plus two hours of intense Zumba dance routines guided by instructors from Lakeside Fitness. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Zumba, imagine the sweatiest nightclub mixed with hip-hop music, non-stop dance routines and lots of chanting.
Although Friday night’s event was all ladies, men were welcome to attend the fun evening. The workout lasted from 7 to 9 p.m. at Oakwood’s Hilltop Center. A cash bar was available along with some healthier snacks like fruits and cheeses.
Don’t tell you workout buddy from the gym, but these breaks usually meant Coronas and wine with just a splash of water.
