The news turned out to not be quite as bad as initially thought for the Warsaw boys soccer team.

The Tigers, ranked No. 2 in Class 2-A, were forced on Tuesday to forfeit nine regular-season wins due  to a clerical error by the WCHS athletic department that allowed an ineligible player to compete.

Warsaw, which self-reported its error to the IHSAA upon discovering it, went back and assessed match video and statistician records from the season. Upon further review, the team will now have to forfeit seven matches and not nine that the player in question had played in.

The Tigers forfeit six wins and a tie from the regular season. Coach Scott Bauer’s team, which has posted a 15-1-2 overall record and a 5-0-2 mark in the NLC on the field, is now 8-8-2 overall and 3-2-2 in the NLC.

The seven forfeits, which does include league contests versus Elkhart Memorial and NorthWood, does still cost the Tigers the conference championship. Warsaw defeated Memorial 2-0 and NorthWood 3-2 on the field. Concord finished 5-1-1 in league play and is now the NLC champion. Goshen finished 4-0-3 and takes second place in the NLC. Warsaw tied Goshen 0-0 and also tied Concord 1-1.

The Tigers have outscored its opponents 54-7 this season. Their lone loss was a 1-0 setback to Fort Wayne Carroll.

Warsaw opened sectional play Wednesday night with a 5-0 win over Wawasee in the Plymouth Sectional. The No. 2 Tigers meet Culver Academy Saturday at 7 p.m. in the sectional championship game at Plymouth. Warsaw, which lost in the semi state title game a year ago to finish at 18-4-1, is going for its fifth straight sectional title.
