Cubs Land Six All-Stars In MWL All-Star Game
SOUTH BEND – Six members of the South Bend Cubs have been rewarded for their first half success by being named to the Midwest League All-Star Game.
Getting the start for the Eastern Division in Cedar Rapids on June 21 are second baseman Andrew Ely, third baseman Jesse Hodges plus outfielders Eloy Jimenez and Donnie Dewees.
Carson Sands and Adbert Alozlay have been named to the Eastern Division’s pitching staff.
Ely will be the Eastern Division’s starting second baseman. The 2014 32 round pick of the Chicago Cubs is hitting .292 with two home runs and 12 driven in (statistics as of game action on June 7).
Hodges will take the field for the East as the team’s starting third baseman. The native of British Columbia is sporting a .294 average with 16 runs scored and 10 runs batted in over 33 games. Hodges was signed by the Chicago Cubs as a non-drafted free agent in 2012.
Jimenez, who was recently named the Chicago Cubs Minor League Player of the Month for May after hitting .364 with seven home runs and 23 RBI, will get the start in the outfield for the Eastern Division. The 19-year old leads Cubs’ hitters with a .316 batting average and eight home runs. Jimenez is tied for the team lead with 36 runs batted in. The native of the Dominican Republic was signed as a non-drafted free agent in 2013 by the Chicago Cubs.
Dewees, the Chicago Cubs second round pick last summer out of the North Florida, will start along side Jimenez in the outfield. The native of Florida is hitting .281 with a .339 on-base percentage plus two home runs , 36 batters driven in and a league leading ten triples. Earlier this season Dewees had a 19 game on-base streak.
Sands leads South Bend’s pitching staff with five wins in nine starts this season. The left-handed starting pitcher has allowed only 37 hits and 17 earned runs over 46 and a third innings with an ERA of 3.30. Sands was the Chicago Cubs fourth round pick in the 2014 MLB Draft.
Alzolay through nine starts is 4-2 with a 3.72 earned run average. The right-handed starter has thrown 48 and one third innings giving up 36 hits and 20 earned runs. Alzolay was a non-drafted free agent signing by the Chicago Cubs in 2012.
South Bend and Bowling Green led the Eastern Division with six representatives in the game.
