WINONA LAKE – A picture perfect day to be outside blessed an opportunity for music lovers to spend their Saturday night indoors. The 2016 Jazz Fest at the Winona Heritage Room, part of the Village of Winona Festival of Music, had a good-sized crowd of all ages groovin’ to the jazz tunes of a pair of area bands.
Truth In Jazz, an ensemble from Elkhart, and New Millennium Jazz Orchestra, hailing from Fort Wayne, filled the former Rodeheaver Auditorium with smooth tones and familiar sounds. Truth In Jazz opened with “Beat It” by Michael Jackson as an ode to the Hoosier state’s Bicentennial and continued on with an Indiana-themed playlist. New Millennium didn’t slow down any, taking its touch to songs old and new.
The Festival of Music is a continuation of performances throughout the summer. A pair of July shows will have Marty Becker conduct an 80-member concert band with the theme of Celebrate America Pops, a patriotic ode to America on July 2, a 7:45 p.m. start that will lead into fireworks over Winona Lake. The River Raisin Ragtime Revue’s “Celebrating America’s Musical Heritage” takes place July 9 at 3 p.m. in the Winona Heritage Room.
Two shows are scheduled for August and one on Labor Day weekend in September.
