Area Prep Players Net Tennis Honors
The area high school girls tennis scene is well represented by a plethora of players accorded All-State honors by the Indiana High School Tennis Coaches Association.
The lengthy list of standout performers includes the Warsaw singles lineup of Liza Lewis, Colette Smith and Ella Knight. The sophomore trio all earned honorable mention honors on the All-State list. The talented threesome led coach Rick Orban’s team to sectional and regional championships this Spring.
The honored players list also includes an outstanding trio of Triton players. The Trojan threesome of Shayla May (No. 1 singles) and its top doubles team of Hannah Wanemacher and Emma Ross earned honorable mention All-State honors for coach Al Peckham’s team. The trio led the Trojans to a 13-2 record, which included conference regular season and tournament championships this season.
The All-State list includes Elkhart Memorial star Krystal Grubb. The junior was a first-team selection to the squad. The first-team list also includes No. 1 singles player Maddie Yergler of South Bend St. Joseph and the doubles team of Ceci Pekarek and Talle Corrigan from the Indians. St. Joe, which defeated Warsaw 5-0 in the semistate, was state runner-up. The Penn doubles team of Amanda Ahmed and Emma Moon also earned first-team honors.
The second-team list of honorees includes Fairfield singles star Emily Mast. Also named second team were the Plymouth doubles team of Kendall Dreibelbis and McKenzie Scheetz and the NorthWood doubles duo of Jama Rice and Kennedy Wiens.
The list of singles players earning honorable mention All-State honors includes Mary Mullaney and Maria Anthony of St. Joe, Tayla Brown of Penn, Kylie Phillips of Bremen, Alana Brubaker of Concord, Taylor Freedline of Elkhart Memorial, Morgan Mast of Fairfield, Sydney Wysong of NorthWood and the Plymouth trio of Lanae Singleton, Cortni Cook and Ashley Harrett. The Plymouth doubles team of Kayla Hoober and Leah Smith were also chosen as honorable mention.
