Explosive Device Disarmed In Goshen
GOSHEN — This morning at 12:28 a.m. an officer with the Goshen Police Department initiated a traffic stop in the 1600 block of Elkhart Road (near US 33 and Riverside). Upon approaching the driver’s window the officer observed, worn on the driver, a vest with multiple wires extending from it. The driver made comments alerting the officer that the vest may contain an explosive device.
The officer called for additional assistance and for the Elkhart Police Department Bomb Unit to be called to his location.
A Goshen Police Officer stayed in contact with the suspect during the incident and was able to convince the subject to exit the vehicle while leaving the potentially explosive device in the motor vehicle.
At 1:24 a.m. the subject was transported to the Goshen Police Department for further investigation.
At approximately 2:30 a.m. EPD Bomb Unit arrived and staged for assistance. The area around the vehicle was cleared and secured by officers as the EPD Bomb unit commenced in disarming the device left in the motor vehicle. At approximately 4:06 a.m. EPD Bomb Unit had disarmed the device.
Goshen Evidence technicians were on scene to process the scene after being given the all clear by the bomb unit.
In the interest of public safety, traffic along Elkhart Road was blocked during the entirety of the incident but the roadway was opened a short time ago
Following additional investigation the subject was arrested and transported the Elkhart County Jail. Sherman Fuller, 45, Goshen, was arrested on preliminary charge of Unauthorized Possession, Manufacture, or Distribution of Destructive Device; Level 5 Felony.
The investigation is continuing and additional charges may follow.
