Texas Authorities Help Deliver Baby On Side Of Highway 6
NAVASOTA, TEXAS — Saturday night, June 9, authorities in Grimes County found themselves delivering a baby on the side of the road after getting a call that a Navasota, Texas, woman was in labor and wasn’t going to make it to the hospital.
“Basically what was going through my mind, I was nervous,” said Trooper Dylan Duke.
Around 7 p.m. Saturday, Trooper Duke got the call that a Navasota woman was in labor at a gas station on FM 2 and highway 6. Duke says he was in the area so he answered the call.
“When I got here we put her in the back seat,” said Duke. “We were on the phone with St. Joseph communications the whole time walking me through it.”
The hospital operators walked him and Grimes County Sheriff’s deputy, Steven Siracusa, step by step through the delivery process.
“We both relied on each other,” said Duke. “We kind of helped each other as far as keeping her supported.”
Duke says while he was nervous at the thought of delivering a child, he’d actually been trained to do so in the academy. And it’s those skills he believed kicked into action.
“It definitely helped,” he said. “I was able to stay calm and keep her as calm as we possibly could.”
The baby, Oscar Jr., was born at 7:19 p.m.
“The baby was happy and healthy,” said Duke. “He was a little screamer; he did excellent, he was awesome.”
“It was a blessing,” said Duke. “This was a light to the darkness that’s been going on recently so this is definitely something that we needed.”
The picture Trooper Duke posted has already been shared over 200 times on Facebook.
