Kernals Take It In Extras [VIDEO]
FORT WAYNE – Luis Arraez tripled coupled with an error to score the winning run in a 3-2 Cedar Rapids Kernels win Monday against the Fort Wayne TinCaps at Parkview Field.
With the score tied, 2-2, Arraez led off for the Kernels (15-10, 51-43) with a triple into the right-field corner against David Bednar (L, 0-1). Arraez scored on the play as the relay throw sailed into the stands behind third base. Despite taking the loss, Bednar had pitched a scoreless eighth inning and ninth, and retired one batter in the 10th before exiting.
Fort Wayne (9-16, 45-50) initially led 1-0 thanks to an RBI single from shortstop Ruddy Giron in the second.
The TinCaps carried their lead into the sixth inning on the heels of a fine pitching performance from starter Chris Paddack, who struck out eight over five scoreless innings.
However, against José Castillo in the sixth, the Kernels scored twice to take a 2-1 advantage. Fort Wayne tied it in the home half of the frame on a Brad Zunica RBI double.
Andrew Velazquez (W, 1-0) earned the victory for the visitors with three scoreless innings. Williams Ramirez (S, 4) quelled a potential TinCaps rally in the 10th.
All teams in the Midwest League are off on Tuesday, so Fort Wayne will play Wednesday at Wisconsin, which will feature the TinCaps debut of Anderson Espinoza. The 18-year-old is the No. 1 prospect in the organization after coming over in the Drew Pomeranz deal with Boston last week.
