Cubs Win Wild One Over Loons
SOUTH BEND – The South Bend Cubs picked up an unconventional victory over the Great Lakes Loons Saturday at Four Winds Field, 5-4.
South Bend led 4-1 going to the top of the eight when reliever Carson Sands walked the bases loaded. Tanner Griggs came on and the Loons scored three times on a bases loaded walk, a sacrifice fly and a ground out.
The Loons decided to return the favor in the bottom of the eighth.
Eloy Jimenez was hit by a pitch with one-out. A wild pitch moved him to second base. Another wild pitch advanced him to third. Jimenez scored on, you guessed it, a wild pitch by Angel German to give the Cubs a 5-4 advantage.
Cubs starter Adbert Alzolay recorded his second straight strong start. The right-hander tossed six innings of one run ball scattering four hits while striking out five.
Cubs outfielder Eddy Martinez tied the game at one in the bottom of the fourth inning on a single that scored Andruw Monasterio. The Cubs inning picked up steam when Loons’ second baseman Zach McKinstry had a possible double play ball go through his legs.
South Bend took control of the game with a three-run sixth inning off reliever Tony Gonsolin.
Martinez picked up his second RBI of the night on a single plating Alberto Mineo who had singled. After an Eloy Jimenez double, Matt Rose drove in Martinez and Jimenez with a double to give the Cubs a 4-1 lead.
