SYRACUSE — Lately, the weather this summer has meant that adults have more indoor time, making reading and watching movies a popular activIty. During June, adults pushed ahead of teen readers in the Bicentennial Book Battle. Adult participants are invited to the victory party 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 12 to watch “The Artist” and dine at a sandwich bar. Participants are asked to sign-up by calling (574) 457-3022 or at the checkout desk. The event is hosted by friends of the library.
Popular prizes for teen readers this summer were for coupons to local businesses, and the free book choice for reading seven books and a thousand pages.
The children’s department of the Syracuse Library gave 920 weekly prizes to children that read library books during the eight week summer reading program. Children that read for six or more weeks were entered into a drawing for a Harry Potter book, Lego book and Kindle Fire. Winners of the eight weekly drawings this summer have been announced on Facebook.
Books clubs are in full swing now that school is in session. Young adult book club is for young people grades sixth through twelfth and meets at 5 p.m. the first and third Tuesdays of the month. Children from kindergarten to fifth grade are invited to join an evening of reading, games, and snacks at 5 p.m. the second Tuesday of the month. The adult book club, One Book, One Hour is reading the popular Pulitzer prize for fiction “All the Light We Cannot See” by Anthony Doerr. The group is informal and welcomes new guests at their monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 14.
The group is meeting “The Doctor” for a new season at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24. Attending the evening is a fun way to review Doctor Who with group games, viewing episodes and eat theme food.
More dancing is planned for young children this fall. Beginning in September the Syracuse Library is starting at 10:30 a.m. Monday and Tuesday story times. Wednesdays will alternate between, Toddle on Over and Happy Feet. After school story and craft is meeting on a new day at 4 p.m. on Thursdays.
