Warsaw Sports Wrap: Aug. 18
Girls Soccer
It was quite a night for the duo of Mariah Rivera and Abby Steffensmeier of the Warsaw girls soccer team.
Senior Rivera and freshman Steffensmeier each tallied three goals as the talented Tigers rolled to an 8-0 win over host Manchester.
Warsaw coach Peter Lucht commented that it was the first time in over 10 years of coaching that he had two players earn a hat trick in the same match.
The three goals by Steffensmeier was the first of her varsity career.
Warsaw, now 2-0 on the season, led 3-0 at halftime of the non-conference affair. The Tigers added five more goals in the second half as plenty of players saw action for Lucht’s strong squad.
Delaney Taylor also had a strong showing with a goal and two assists for the winners. Sydney Wiedeman added a goal and one assist for the Tigers.
The trio of Julie Frazzetta, Brenna Burt and Breck Jackson each had one assist. Kayla Patton and Chloe Snow each had a save in goal for Warsaw, which allowed just two shots in the contest.
Warsaw plays in the South Bend St. Joseph Invite on Friday night and Saturday at Newton Park in Lakeville. The Tigers are slated to play Hamilton Southeastern Friday night and then face Chesterton and Penn on Saturday.
Volleyball
The Warsaw volleyball team dropped a marathon match at Huntington North.
The host Vikings took the contest by a 3-2 final, winning the final set 15-9.
Alexis Day led the offense for the Tigers with 16 kills. Hanna Leach had 10 kills and Kacy Bragg seven. Bragg had 50 assists and Leach two blocks. Rachel Yeager had five aces and Erin Peugh had 24 digs and Day 18. The Tigers drop to 0-2 on the season.
The Warsaw JV team topped the Vikings 25-24, 25-18. Cassadi Colbert had nine kills, while Addie Dickerhoff had three and Gwyn Bellamy 2. Dickerhoff also had 15 assists, four aces and four digs. Courtney Chookie had two aces. Amy Herendeen collected eight digs, while Mckenna Hawblitzel and Megan Sullivan each had four for Warsaw, now 2-0.
The freshman team topped Huntington North 25-8, 25-11 to move to 3-0. Brooklyn Slone and Sierra Derossett each had seven kills, while Delaney Walters had five, Kaia Hummitch four and Sophia Long three. Katie Schmidt and Brooklyn Slone each had two aces. Schmidt also had 24 assists and eight digs. Allie McGuire had 13 digs, while Kylie Prater and Slone each had 12.
Warsaw plays in the Kokomo Invitational on Saturday.
