Cubs Rally Again To Trip Up Dragons [VIDEO]
SOUTH BEND – Justin Steele allowed just five hits over six innings, leading the South Bend Cubs over the Dayton Dragons in a 3-2 win on Sunday.
Steele allowed two runs while striking out five.
Up 1-0 in the fifth, Dayton added to its lead when Luis Gonzalez hit an RBI single, scoring Zack Shields.
After South Bend scored a run in the seventh when Alberto Mineo hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Eddy Martinez, the Cubs took the lead for good in the eighth inning when P.J. Higgins singled to bring home Carlos Sepulveda and Connor Myers.
Pedro Araujo (3-0) got the win with two innings of scoreless, three-hit relief while Ryan Hendrix (3-1) took the loss in the Midwest League game. Dillon Maples retired the side in order for his ninth save of the season.
Gonzalez doubled twice and singled for the Dragons.
With the win, South Bend improved to 14-5 against Dayton this season. The Cubs are set to break the franchise attendance mark Monday, sitting at 346,157 after Sunday’s win. Only 1,521 short of the 2015 record of 347,678, South Bend would only need less than half capacity to break the 350,000 mark for the first time ever.
First pitch Monday for the regular season finale is set for 2 p.m. South Bend will then look toward the Midwest League playoffs Wednesday in a best of three series against West Michigan.
