Warsaw Volleyball: JV, Frosh Claim Championships
The Warsaw volleyball program had a very successful showing on Saturday.
Both the junior varsity and freshman Tiger teams continued outstanding seasons by winning championships in invitationals.
The Warsaw JV team, coached by Chandra Hepler, went 3-1 to win the Michigan City Invitational title for the fourth time in the last five years.
The Tiger JV beat an undefeated Penn team 25-20, 24-25, 15-10 before losing to Valparaiso 23-25, 25-10, 12-15. Warsaw then topped Kankakee Valley 25-15, 25-12 before beating Munster 25-23, 14-25, 15-13 in the championship match.
Cassadi Colbert led the offense on the day with a total of 26 kills. Courtney Chookie slammed 15 kills, while Gwyn Bellamy had 13, Emma Gelbaugh and Addie Dickerhoff eight each and Kenzie Martz four.
Chookie paced the serving parade with 11 aces. Dickerhoff had 10, Emali Grose nine, Colbert three, Bellamy two and Martz one. Amy Herendeen and Dickerhoff led the defense with 30 digs each. Colbert added 17, while Chookie had 11, Grose 10 and Bellamy nine. Martz had three and Gabby Hamill and Megan Sullivan two each.
Gelbaugh was big at the net on the day with five blocks. Colbert added two and Bellamy and Martz each had one. Dickerhoff piled up 65 assists in the four matches.
The JV team is now 13-1 overall (including a 3-0 mark in conference play) and will host Columbia City Tuesday night at 6:!5 p.m.
The Tiger frosh team, coached by James Schmidt, went a perfect 4-0 to win its own invitational title.
The frosh Tigers, who remain undefeated on the season, beat Muncie Central 25-14, 25-15, South Bend St. Joseph 25-19, 25-20 and Huntington North 25-10, 25-7. Warsaw then topped NLC rival Elkhart Memorial 25-24, 25-24 in the championship match. The Tigers trailed 21-14 in the second set before rallying for the win.
Katie Schmidt had another big day for the undefeated Tigers. She finished with 18 aces to go with seven kills, 18 digs and 84 assists.
McKenna Hawblitzel had 11 aces, while Sierra Dereossett, Kylie Prater and Allie Mcguire each had seven and Sophia Long two for the champs. Kaia Hummitch had 18 kills, while Derossett had 16, Reagan Roulo and Long 13 each, Delaney Walters five and Julia Crater one.
Kylie Prater led the defensive effort with 53 digs on the day. McGuire had 51 digs, Hawblitzel 45, Derossett 28, Roulo 11, Crater six, Long four and Hummitch three. Long had three blocks and Hummitch, Derossett and Hawblitzel one each.
The frosh squad is now 16-0 overall (3-0 in the NLC) and will host Columbia City Tuesday evening at 6:15 p.m.
