Late Night Race To Be Held In Winona Lake
WINONA LAKE — The Nocturnal 7, a three to four mile race in the dark, will be taking place in Winona Lake at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1.
This race is organized by Matt and Micah Metzger who partner with Grace College the Indiana State Police and the Warsaw Police Department. It is the final event for the Grace College Homecoming weekend.
The event has been growing since its conception seven years ago. Last year’s race had the biggest turnout with 500 people participating in the race while the first Nocturnal had 75 participants.
The course changes every year to keep things interesting. The course this year will lead racers through the woods, water and through Winona Lake, all in the dark.
When participants arrive, they will receive a map of the race, which will include the stations racers will need to stop at in order to complete the race. The route will include approximately five or six stations. Each station will include it’s own unique set of obstacles for racers.
Second Mile Wildflowers, law enforcement and individuals from Grace College will be hosting stations that will include challenges for participants to complete.
“It’s a big night, way more than just a race,” said Matt Metzger.
Besides the race, the event will also include awards for various titles such as the largest team, coolest costume, most bling, top finishers and other various awards.
Matt Metzger mentioned he loves seeing the community and the police come together to make the race become what is has over the last several years.
“It’s awesome to see community love each other,” said Dennis Duncan, director of alumni engagement at Grace College. Duncan will be operating one of the stations along the route.
Individuals of all physical levels are encouraged to participate. Micah Metzger mentions some people take it seriously and start off running and are determined to finish first, while others like to go a slower pace and enjoy the night.
The race will begin at the Gordon Recreation Center located on the Grace College campus, 100 Publishers Drive, Winona Lake. Groups can sign up as teams or individuals run alone. Participants should bring lights and clean clothes for this event. Participants are encouraged to arrive around 6 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. in order to have time be briefed on the evening.
The race will also include door prizes for two bikes and also raffle tickets will be on sale for various prices.
All of the proceeds from the race will go to “Christmas With A Cop” and a general project fund at Grace College.
