WARSAW — The Association of Indiana Counties (AIC) and Nationwide presented a $500 check, half of the total winnings, to the 2016 Indiana College Scholarship winner at today’s commissioners meeting.

David Bottorff with AIC and Jennifer Brown with Nationwide presented Ms. Amy Irwin a $500 check for her son, Jacob Semonis, Warsaw. The scholarship winner receives the $1,000 scholarship over the course of two semesters. Only one student in the state is chosen.

To be eligible for the $1,000 scholarship, the applicant must have graduated from an Indiana high school and be attending undergraduate studies. The applicant’s parent, grandparent or legal guardian must be an Indiana county employee of an AIC Affiliate Office and must be enrolled in and contribute to the NACo 457 Deferred Compensation Plan.

Jacob Semonis is currently attending Purdue University where he is studying agricultural economics and agronomy. He plans to come back to Kosciusko County to work on his family’s farm.

Other business:

• George Robertson presented the economic development quarterly update and reported higher rates of economic growth and employment for the county. County unemployment is down to 3.5 percent. Robertson stated he is currently working with local companies on sending employed machinists to Ivy Tech for education.
• Sheryl Conley reported the first AcceLinx quarterly update and advised that Orthoworks continues to raise funds for property expenses.
• Commissioners approved an ordinance for a speed limit decrease in the Fox Run subdivision in Turkey Creek Township. The approved speed limit is 25 mph.
