Local Brownie Troop Supports Local Organization
WARSAW — A Warsaw Brownie Troop has been making efforts to support a local non-profit organization.
Local Brownie Troop 00464 is comprised of seven girls in second and third grade. Last fall, the troop learned about Kate’s Kart from one of their troop members. One of the Brownie’s members regularly receives blood transfusions, causing her to have overnight hospital stays. During her visits, she has received books from Kate’s Kart.
Kate’s Kart is an organization that gives approximately 2,500 new books a month to hospitalized children at medical centers in Northeast Indiana, including Kosciusko Community Hospital. Kate’s Kart will soon be servicing Parkview Warsaw. All the volunteers who work with Kate’s Kart, collect new books and distribute them from carts in hospitals.
Troop leader, Carole Delp, she and her co-leaders try to focus on philanthropy in the community. The troop has given money and volunteered at various places in the community. The group wanted to do something else in the community to “give back.”
“It started out simple,” said Delp. Last year, the girls decided to forgo their troop’s Christmas party and gift exchange to use the money they would have used on Christmas gifts for the troop to instead purchase new books for Kate’s Kart.
After donating the books they had purchased, Kate’s Kart asked if the troop would be interested in walking in the Three Rivers Festival parade that happened this past summer. In preparation of the parade, the troop filled 600 bags with books.
The troop is now in the process of creating a Kate’s Kart badge for Brownies.
The troop will have a booth at First Friday on Oct. 7. They will be passing out bookmarks that tell about Kate’s Kart and how they give new books to children in the hospital for tests, infusions, ER or are there for a stay.
Delp says, “They have great hearts.”
