Woman Says Stranger Accidentally Stole Her Subaru, Returned It With Gas Money
PORTLAND, ORE. — A Portland woman got a pleasant surprise when her stolen car was returned home with an apology note—and even some gas money.
According to Erin Hatzi’s Facebook post, her car was stolen Tuesday from outside her Woodstock neighborhood home. She posted several pictures of surveillance video showing a stranger getting into her car and driving away with it.
Wednesday afternoon, the mystery was solved. A stranger returned the “Subie” with an apology note that reads in part, “So sorry I stole your car. I sent my friend with my key to pick up my red Subaru and she came back with your car.”
The note came with $30 in cash for gas money.
Though the story is gaining traction online, it’s by no means the first of its kind. Police have confirmed some older-model Subaru vehicles have interchangeable keys.
