Wawasee Swimming: Warriors Earn Sweep Of Chargers
SYRACUSE — The Wawasee boys and girls swim teams got things back on track Tuesday evening. After dropping meets to Warsaw on Saturday, the Warriors welcomed in Memorial and promptly swept the Chargers, 127-55 in the boys meet and 121-55 in the girls.
Unlike Saturday’s loss, Tuesday’s win did not come down to the 400 free relay in the boys meet. No, instead Wawasee had things wrapped up well before that point. The Warriors won nine individual events and two relays to earn the lopsided victory.
Brady Robinson, Jared Krugman, Spencer Naugler and Brett Willaman all led the Warriors with two wins each in individual events.
Robinson swam a 23.01 to win the 50 free and would later swim a lifetime best in the 100 breast, 1:02.18, to capture first in the event. Krugman was tops in the 200 IM with a time of 2:04.14 as well as the 500 free. The junior finished with a 5:05.62 in the distance event. Naugler enjoyed victories in the 100 fly (1:00.25) as well as the 100 back (1:02.16). Willaman, meanwhile, swam top times in both the 100 free (54.64) and 200 free (2:00.27).
Austin Dunithan took first in the evening’s diving portion with a final score of 179.10. Dunithan beat out teammates Brady Claaseen (167.80) and Dane Jenkins (126.50).
Other notable individual performances for the boys included Eric Park’s lifetime best in the 200 free (2:05.54), Alex Mathew’s lifetime bests in both the 100 free (59.51) and 100 back (1:13.98) and Colin Thomas’ lifetime best in the 100 free (1:00.52).
Memorial’s lone win in the boys meet came in the 200 medley relay. The Chargers team of Aaron Simpson, Mitchell Rockrohr, Daniel Simenov and Nathan Mora posted a final time of 1:55.96.
Wawasee won the 200 free relay behind a final time of 1:40.72 from the team of Willaman, Jake Cowan, Krugman and Robinson. Those same four swam a 3:38.88 to win the 400 free relay to close out the meet.
The girls favored almost as well as the boys did in Tuesday’s meet. Wawasee’s ladies won six individual events and two relays to fuel their comfortable win.
Shelby Adams and Paige Miller flip-flopped signature events to make things more interesting for the meet. Adams surprised herself by winning the 500 free, the event Miller is most associated with, by swimming a time of 5:40.50, well ahead of second place Lizzy Brugh of Wawasee who swam a 6:19.82. Adams also won the 200 free with a time of 2:06.26.
Miller took first in Adams’ usual event, the 100 breast, as she finished with a time of 1:14.68, giving herself a nice cushion over Ashlyn Corpe who was second with a 1:21.66. Miller also took first in the 200 IM by swimming a 2:14.94.
Alyssa Koch was the other Warrior to pick up an individual win in the pool. Koch swam a 1:05.25 to win the 100 back over teammate Ebba Bjurman (1:11.25).
Riley Kunkle took first in the diving portion for the girls meet. The senior posted a 141.10.
Freshman Ella Park swam lifetime bests in the 200 free (2:08.69) and 100 fly (1:13.55). Park was second in both events. Jasmine Morehead highlighted her night as she turned in a lifetime best in the 100 free (1:06.34).
Memorial won the 200 medley relay to start the night. The team of Katie Stephan, Corpe, Kim Rezutko and Ally Bailey swam a 2:11.03 to beat out Wawasee. Bailey also took first place in the 50 free (25.94) and the 100 free (58.95). Rezutko took first in the 100 fly (1:04.68).
Wawasee’s 200 free relay team took first behind a time of 1:48.21 from Kaia Manning, Koch, Adams and Miller. Manning, Miller, Adams and Bjurman swam a 4:00.10 to win the 400 free relay later in the meet.
Wawasee’s girls now stand at 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the Northern Lakes Conference. The boys move to 1-1 overall and 1-1 in the NLC. Both teams return to action against Concord next Tuesday. The Warriors will host their annual invite on Saturday, December 10 at Wawasee Middle School.
