WARSAW – Andrew Mevis was a field-changer and a game-changer the past two seasons for the Warsaw football team.

Now, the do-it-all kicking star hopes to have the same impact at the next level for Fordham University.

Mevis has made a verbal commitment to play for the NCAA Division I Rams starting next fall. The All-American plans to make it official and sign with the program in New York this coming Wednesday morning at WCHS.

Warsaw football coach Phil Jensen knew that he had some special “weapon” in his special teams star.

“He can place it pretty much where he wants on punts or kickoffs,” said Jensen after Mevis was chosen as an All-American. “He just has a great work ethic to go with tremendous talent and intelligence.”

Mevis turned in a stellar senior season this past fall for the Tigers.  He drilled 43-45 PATs and nailed 9-12 field goals. The nine made field goals tied the single-season program record set by Jake Rogers in 2005 and Caleb Klusman in 2014.

Mevis, a 5-11, 190-pounder, tied the school standard with a 51-yard field goal versus Concord on Oct. 14. That kick tied Rogers’ mark. Rogers went on to kick at the University of Cincinnati and in the NFL. Mevis just missed on a 54-yard field goal try in the game versus the Minutemen.

Mevis was ranked as the eighth best kicker in the country and the 11th best punter by Kohl’s Kicking. He took part in the Under Armour All-American Bowl Jan. 1 in Orlando, where he made a 46-yard field goal to help his team to a 24-21 victory.

Mevis, who also played soccer at WCHS, also received recruiting interest from Notre Dame, Purdue, Michigan State, Bowling Green and Louisville.

Mevis also holds the single-season punting average mark for the program with a 39.1 per kick average in 2015. He drilled three field goals in Warsaw’s 23-13 sectional semifinal win over Carroll.

Fordham, which gave Mevis a four-year, full-ride scholarship, competes in the Patriot League in football. The highly-prestigious academic institution finished 8-3 this past season on the gridiron.

Mevis also excels in the classroom too. He has an 11.9 grade-point average on a 12.0 scale.
